- Downton Abbey is a British period drama with a large ensemble cast Downton Abbey tells the story of a fictional manor house in Northern England home to the Crawley family and their servants. Set over an extended period of time in post Edwardian Britain the show depicts the personal lives, intimate relationships and historical events that impacted upon the British aristocracy over a ten year period; historical events including the sinking of RMS Titanic, the outbreak of the First World War and the birth of the Irish Free State are all portrayed alongside issues of class.
