Written by E.Nesbit, author of 'The Railway Children', this is the movie of five childrens' chance encounter with 'The Psammead'- an ancient, extremely irritable, sand fairy who has the ability to make wishes come. The only problem is that the wishes only last till sunset and the children also find it hard to think of sensible wishes!

This classic story is given the Hollywood treatment - meaning it hardly resembles the book and ends up all sugary and Disneyfied. Even the dialogue seems to have been especially written for the Yanks in places.
I loathe Eddie Izzard - but he does an admirable job of providing the voice of the Psammead (which is a little too CGI for my taste).
In short, this will keep the kids quiet for an hour and a half, but the original book is preferable.
