Synopsis:
BBC series in which steeplejack Fred Dibnah takes a look at Britain's national architectural treasures.

Forts and Castles
Fred starts his journey high above Salisbury Plain at the mighty hill fort of Old Sarum near Stonehenge but it is at the awe-inspiring Hadrian's Wall that we get to see a true feat of engineering, and Fred marvels at the design of Roman toilets at Housesteads Fort. From this formidable man-made frontier, Fred travels to castles that were built with the sole purpose of protecting the country from invasion. From Dover Castle, with its obvious strategic position and long and eventful history, to Edinburgh Castle, which dominates the skyline on its volcanic crag and where Fred checks his watch as the One O'clock gun is fired. It's then on to Conwy Castle and finally to Warwick Castle where he joins a band of medieval knights to test the castle's defences.
Houses and Palaces
From his modest childhood home in Bolton still with the chimney he built as a teenager, Fred travels to Ightham Mote where he has a go at making mortar the traditional way out of sifted cow dung, goat hair and lime. It's then on to Hampton Court, the most magnificent Tudor palace in England, before he heads to Lacock Abbey, a wonderful country home built on the foundations of a former nunnery. It's then on to Cragside, the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity and crammed with ingenious gadgets for its time including a telephone, hot and cold running water, a fire alarm and a hydraulic lift. From there Fred travels to Beamish and looks at ordinary terraced homes such as would be found in most towns and cities.
