Life in the 20th century proved to be amazing. From the realisation of flight by the Wright brothers at the turn of the century in 1903 to Neil Armstrong and the moon landing in 1969, technological advances have progressed at a tremendous rate. Events took place that shaped our civilisation and changed the destiny of humanity forever. Individual achievements, such as Albert Einstein and relativity and the invention of penicillin have improved the quality of life for the entire population. Advances in scientific knowledge have created medical miracles as well as devices capable of mass destruction. Wars such as Vietnam, disasters and financial collapses like the Great Depression have caused great turmoil in our societies. These extreme situations evoked cooperation between individuals and countries just to survive. The arrival of the new millennium implored us to refer back to events of the past as a guide to what we face now. Impressions made by occurrences in our times can never be forgotten.
