Synopsis:
Heaven 17 – the British Synthpop band that found fame in England in the 1980's – are back on DVD with this astonishing gig from the London Scala. Rediscover the unique sounds of Heaven 17's chart successes and dive into their world of politics and synthesizers in the way that rocked the music scene back in the 80's. Taking their name from a fictional pop group mentioned in Anthony Burgess' novel 'A Clockwork Orange', Heaven 17 formed when Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware split from their earlier group The Human League. Together with Glenn Gregory on vocals, they completed their lineup for Heaven 17.
Their debut single '(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang' from the same album attracted attention, became a left-wing anthem, and was banned by the BBC because of its overtly political lyrics. They enjoyed major chart success with the single 'Temptation' which reached number 2 in the U.K. charts in summer 1983. The album, The Luxury Gap, itself charted at their best ever position, number four. Heaven 17 went on to fuse funk and pop through a series of vital 80's albums and singles gaining chart success and cult status along the way. For the pre MTV generation who religiously watched Top of the Pops every week, just the titles of some of their biggest hits, Come Live With Me, At The Height Of The Fighting and of course, Temptation, are enough to start their toes tapping. 2005 saw the release of the long-awaited Before After; the album having a much more contemporary dance sound compared to previous albums. This DVD captures Heaven 17 at the London Scala performing better than ever.
