- Director Bill Forsyth (That Sinking Feeling, Gregory's Girl, Local Hero, Comfort and Joy) made his American film debut with this moving and offbeat adaptation of Marilynne Robinson's acclaimed novel, about two young girls who are sent to live with their eccentric aunt (Christine Lahti) after the suicide of their mother.

Underrated, Understated - Housekeeping review by PE
If you are a committed cinephile you have got to see this film. It is a gently seditious hymn: the story, the cast, the direction, the mise-en-scene, it all works in perfect harmony. Christine Lahti lends such a quiet, ambiguous air to her character Sylvie, one can't help but wonder if she's really there. But she is and she's a wonder. True cinematic poetry.
