Synopsis:
In a frantic and wryly comic battle of wits, two Western art collectors - one a wealthy American, the other an eccentric, titled Englishwoman - must vie with a Maharaja and his sister (and each other) to secure a fabulous prize: a legendary collection of Indian miniature paintings. Blessed with a superb cast, headed by Academy Award-winner Peggy Ashcroft, Merchant Ivory Productions' 1978 feature "Hullabaloo Over Georgie and Bonnie's Pictures" is itself a detailed and subtle miniature portrait of the manners and mores of two very different cultures.
As events unfold, Western high-mindedness (mixed with Western acquisitiveness) clashes with Indian history and feudal tradition (also both high-minded and acquisitive). A seeming catastrophe forces the two sides to reconcile their differences and the story concludes in a surprising harmony as the protagonists evaluate and rethink their politely grasping natures. Once again, the Merchant Ivory team has produced a delightful and often very funny film that captures to perfection the exoticism of Indian culture and the pure magic of the miniatures themselves as well as the land that produced them.
