Synopsis:
Taped during the Sixties, at a key moment in the history of jazz, the four American television performances featured in this collector's edition reflect the variety of styles that was essential part of the music of the day. All hosted by the great American critic Ralph Gleason. One of the most controversial tenor saxophonist of the past forty years, an innovator whose influence can still be felt today, John Coltrane was an artist in permanent evolution and one of the greatest tenor saxophonists of all time, and in this awesome appearance he performed fronting his classic quartet from the first half of the Sixties.
A veteran artist who made his initial breakthrough performing with the Duke Ellington's orchestra of the early Forties, the great Ben Webster was in splendid artistic shape during the Sixties, and in this particular date he sounded better than ever. One of the all-time great tenormen in jazz, Sonny Rollins did this television gig in one of the most interesting moments of his career, at a time when he had just made a comeback after three years of voluntary retirement from music. Featuring the adventurous yet very popular Charles Lloyd Quartet, the final taping in this astonishing set caught Lloyd and his men at a moment when they were reaching international success of unprecedented dimensions.
