The Best of Judy Garland captures her essence and offers, through a long-unseen television performance, an opportunity to enjoy again her beautiful, poignant genius. From the rousing Swanee to the affecting monologue into 'The Man That Got Away' to the closing 'Over the Rainbow', this is Judy Garland at her most fabulous. It was as Dorothy in that fabled 1939 picture that Garland will forever be remembered. As bombs reigned down on a war-torn Europe and America vacillated whether to enter the war, Dorothy's innocence painted a picture for millions of happier times and hope. 'Over the Rainbow' was actually to be scrapped originally from the film, as it was felt too mature for a 17-year-old to sing. The song grew in poignancy for Garland as she became older, and, in the live arena that she made her home for the final years of her life, it gained an aching resonance for her. After a successful run of films and a turbulent private life, Garland returned to the live stage and thrilled audiences, no matter what trauma may have faced her offstage.
