Synopsis:
This is the story of a living legend and his part in one of the greatest exploits in British military history: Operation Chastise was the code name given to one of the most audacious air raids of World War II - on the night of 16/17 May 1943, nineteen Lancasters with 133 men of the specially formed 617 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton to attack the Mohne, Sorpe, Ennepe and Eder dams at the heart of the Ruhr. Squadron Leader Johnny Johnson DFM is one of the Last of the Dambusters and hero of the most daring air raid of World War Two.
In this thrilling film, with its super-realistic graphics of combat action, he relives the famous low-| level precision attack on Hitler's giant dams and traces the detailed story of the RAF's secret weapon - the Bouncing Bomb - which he dropped from his iconic Lancaster bomber. In 'Last of the Dambusters' Johnny takes us with him on a personal journey of discovery as he travels to France to dig up the newly discovered crash site of his old aircraft, which was shot down on a later daring mission. He uncovers some fascinating remnants of the aircraft, including parts of the specially adapted Lancaster's secret dam busting modifications - the only ones that now exist. And for the first time ever (on film) a Dambuster flies back to Germany to revisit the huge dams that he attacked on May 16th 1943 and to find out the terrible fate of some of his 53 comrades who never returned from the mission. In emotional scenes at haunting crash sites, Johnny Johnson - Last of the Dambusters - honours the courageous airmen who made the ultimate sacrifice.
