After sustaining a serious injury in the Franco-Russian war, Colonel Chabert (Gerard Depardieu) is mistakenly pronounced dead. He returns home to find that his wife - thinking herself a widow - has remarried. So Chabert enlists the help of a lawyer to prove his identity and regain his honour and estate.
Good but not gripping.

There is some seriously good acting, apart from Depardieu I thought the lawyer was very interesting. Most of the plot was pretty dull and although some of the war scenes were memorable I wouldn't otherwise recommend it.
