In the early 1970's John Lennon and Paul McCartney each carved out hugely successful solo careers - both critically and commercially. However, by the end of 1972 the pair had hit their lowest points since first finding success with The Beatles. 1973's output however put both of them back on the musical map and so began the final period during which John and Paul were recording and releasing music simultaneously and which is the subject of this video. John made only four more albums, his final set of songs released shortly before his brutal murder at the end of 1980. Paul made six further records with Wings and his second solo set, which appeared the summer before his former song-writing partner passed on. 'Composing Outside the Beatles: Lennon and McCartney 1973-1980' is an independent documentary film which reviews John and Paul's music during the second and final part of their parallel post-Beatles careers. From each of their comeback albums - 'Mind Games' and 'Red Rose Speedway' respectively, through Lennon s most successful phase and the enormity of the Wings phenomena, through to John's grande finale and Paul's bizarre but brilliant sophomore solo record. With the aid of rare footage, archive and exclusive interviews, contributions from friends, colleagues and experts, and a generous helping of some superb music, this film tells the story of how and why the further compositions of Lennon and McCartney were written.
