In 19th century France, the romantic daughter of a squire (Emma Rouault) marries a dull country doctor (Charles Bovery). To escape boredom, she throws herself into love affairs with a suave local landowner (Rodolphe Boulanger) and a young law student (Leon Dupuis), and runs up ruinous debts.

This is one of the greatest stories ever written. Flaubert explored emotion like never before in his novel. Unfortunately Chabrol has just transposed the facts of the novel onto screen and forgotten about the cinema. Watch this if you just want to know the story but otherwise try and get your hands on Abraham Valley be Manoel de Oliveira for a fuller version of the novel in film.
