- Released to critical acclaim in 1997, the year of the Hong Kong handover, Fruit Chan's 'Made in Hong Kong' was praised as an anarchic masterpiece, a powerful distillation of urban alienation and youthful despair. 'Mid-Autumn' (Sam Lee) is a small-time triad, stuck in an endless cycle of pointless violence with no hope of escape. After he and his friends witness the suicide of a young girl, they embark on a journey to deliver two letters she had on her when she died.

Excellent film, well worth a watch. - Made in Hong Kong review by LT
I thoroughly enjoyed this film, from the bleak environment that the protagonist finds himself in, to the life that he leads, they help to build an emotional and powerful atmosphere to the late 90's Hong Kong. The turbulence of the time finds itself represented in the young mans life and that of his friends.
An enjoyable drama, another masterful piece of work from Eureka! as part of their Masters of Cinema series, a must watch for any fans of east-Asian cinema.

A stylistic drama set on the mean streets of Hong Kong circa 1997 - Made in Hong Kong review by MN
A fantastic testament to the strength of 90s Hong Kong cinema. It's a coming of age/gangster story shot rough and ready on the mean streets of Hong Kong, circa 1997. The cast is great and it employs pretty much every stylistic trick known in the book. At its core though it's quite an emotional film - talking about how youthful optimism cedes in the face of adult expectations.
If you like other Asian urban dramas like Millennium Mambo and Chungking Express then I've no doubt you'll love it :)

I happened upon this by chance when it was reviewed in the pages of Total Film mag some time ago - so it sat in my list for yonks. An upcoming trip to Hong Kong made me want to take a look at it. I don't think this saw a cinema release in the UK back in 97 - 98 so it completely passed me by. Something of a lost classic, it's been released after a restoration in 2017 by Eureka for their masters of cinema series. I really enjoyed the characterisation by the actors, particularly the lead trio. I also liked the style of the movie. Somewhat rough and ready with it's handheld moves, yet shots were framed with innovation and care, yet they didn't jolt you out the story. It gets quite melodramatic towards the end but somehow it all fits as the main guy is a drama queen anyway. Very funny at times, thrilling or sad in others, MADE IN HONG KONG deserves its reputation as one of Hong Kong cinema's hidden treasures.
