- Synopsis:
- Based on the life of the famous artist Henri De Toulouse Lautrec, John Huston's epic costume drama Moulin Rouge received multiple Oscar nominations, including a nomination for best leading actor for Jose Ferrer's performance as Toulouse Lautrec. Henri De Toulouse Lautrec was the son of a Count, who failed to grow following a disastrous operation on his legs as a child. As an adult he left home to become an artist in Paris, where he found creative inspiration at the Moulin Rouge. However, the women of the Moulin Rouge prove to be more than just his passion but also the path towards his ruin.

Superb - Moulin Rouge review by PM
I was engaged by this film from beginning to end. The colour and glamour haven't faded at all, and as well as being a feast for the eyes, with some astonishing choreography and camera work, it tells a story which most of us could identify with. Dealing with the artists aspirations and failures and how his personal relationships determine his opinion of himself. It's also a window into the Bohemian attitude and culture, thankfully non judgemental, and how it interacts with the culture of the establishment. The dialogue too has not aged at all and remains lively, unpredictable and often very amusing. Highly recommended.
