A hardened, violent policeman (Robert Ryan) is sent to a small town to help the local lawman track down a murderous psychopath. Their investigation leads to a sightless woman (Ida Lupino) - who might be harboring the criminal. As the search continues, the cop observes the young woman's open nature, and the effect of her personality transforms his life forever
Atmospheric Police Drama.

Imaginative film and unusual story of a city cop who is so brutalised by his experiences that he becomes unable to relate to others, frustrated and isolated. Robert Ryan is great in the lead. Ryan is sent to the country to help in a murder case and comes into contact with Ida Lupino's blind recluse, who lives entirely cut off by miles of snow. The cinematography is wonderful, with a striking contrast between the blackness of the city and the blinding white of the country. A mood piece that feels strikingly modern, with a fine score that Bernard Hermann thought his best.
