Synopsis:
Barry Foster plays Orde Wingate in Don Shaw's celebrated trilogy of BBC plays about the military career of one of the most controversial and unorthodox Allied commanders of the Second World War. Born into a religious and military family the young Orde Wingate became a passionate Zionist on his first posting to Palestine and began to develop revolutionary guerrilla tactics to help the Jewish settlers he befriended there. He further developed his expertise in guerrilla warfare leading 'Gideon Force' in Ethiopia against the Italians. His unorthodox tactics led him into frequent clashes with his military superiors and drove him almost to the point of breakdown and suicide.
However, his strong religious convictions would see him through and take him to Burma where he devised a long range penetration strategy and elite fighting forces called 'The Chindits'. Inspired by the Biblical story of Elijah and the Ravens, his revolutionary strategy would prove that the Japanese invaders were anything but invincible. 'Orde Wingate' tells one of the most extraordinary true stories of the Second World War.

Barry Foster Tour de Force performance - Orde Wingate review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert

Interesting episodes covering the career of Orde Wingate an Allied commander during WW2, best known for his handling of the Chindit campaign in Burma during WW2.  Born into a religious and military family, with Lawrence of Arabia a distant family member covering his exploits in Eithiopia, his view that the concept of a homeland for Jews within the British Empire was something I was not aware of.
