- Bearing the burden of her father’s debt and desperate to pay for the completion of her brother’s education, young Ayako (Isuzu Yamada) becomes a mistress to her employer. Although circumstances seem to conspire against her, Ayako attempts to hide the truth from her family and fiance and preserve her reputation.

a sort of early feminist take on why women cant do what men can; forceful if a little detached. - Osaka Elegy review by tm
enjoyed it enough but the characters are drawn in a detached and slightly exaggerated style which means you have less investment in them than might have made the film even more engaging.
Pandora's Box, which was made some years earlier explores similar tropes and ideas with more verve and grace and emotion, albeit a little more melodramatically.
not sure if I would recommend this piece to someone who had few opportunities to watch film.
