Synopsis:
Up and down Britain, there are over a hundred heritage railway lines mostly funded and financed by volunteers. Locomotives, carriages and rolling stock from the past are lovingly restored to pristine condition and operated. Preserved Lines traces the history of each line from its BR demise to the present day, celebrating the history, the preservation, the restoration and the people involved with some of the UK's finest heritage railway lines. Each fascinating programme visits a specific heritage railway line and offers a unique insight into the considerable efforts necessary to keep that heritage railway operating.
Known as 'the friendly line in the Cotswolds', the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway runs along a part of the former Great Western Railway's mainline from Birmingham to Cheltenham, via Stratford-upon-Avon. The line commands wonderful views of the sleepy hamlets and villages, as it runs though the beautiful Cotswold countryside. Although the line closed to passengers in 1960, it continued in use as a goods line until 1976. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway was subsequently formed in 1981, with the aim of restoring the line from Stratford Racecourse to Cheltenham Racecourse back to its former glory. Now you too can enjoy the wonderfully preserved Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway with this nostalgic look at one of Britain's most loved lines.
