Synopsis:
An intoxicating mixture of fact and fiction, Ragtime recreates the real-life scandal of chorus girl Evelyn Nesbitt, whose rich husband famously shot her former lover in public. Brilliantly essaying the outbreak of urban-terrorism in the early part of the Twentieth Century, Ragtime perfectly captures an age that encompassed both dire poverty and fabulous wealth.

Fuzzy image and speech - Ragtime review by HS

Spoiler Alert
19/05/2018

I was looking forward to this, having read so many glowing reviews of Doctorow's book. However I soon gave it up as it was sometimes quite hard to understand what was being said and in spite of an indication (called up by the "Display" button on my remote) that there were subtitles, when there were not. Furthermore the lighting was dim and the outlines of the images fuzzy. I wouldn't bother with it unless perhaps you can try a Blu-ray version.

Superb film, terrible DVD - Ragtime review by CM

Spoiler Alert
11/08/2023

Forman's pruned cine-version of EL Doctorow's excellent book is well-played, brilliant, & sensitively executed, but we missed a lot, since the poor video & audio quality ruin it. Time for a digital re-master if there isn't one yet.
