Synopsis:
Conquest of Everest - On May 29th, 1953, Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay reached the highest point on Earth at the top of Mount Everest. Including rare aerial shots of the summit this documentary traces man's desire to climb the unknown and into history.
Conquering The North Pole - For years men had dreamed of standing at the North Pole, the Frozen Grail of Arctic exploration at the top of the world. But then Frederick Cook and Robert Peary both claimed to have reached the North Pole in 1908. After centuries of failure and gruesome deaths the world now had two claimants for discovering the North Pole. But who was telling the truth, and who was the fraud?
The Race for the South Pole - In 1911 the world was captivated by the race between Captain Scott and Roald Amundsen to reach the South Pole. Whilst Amundsen achieved history and left a note inside a tent at the Pole for Scott to read, the fate of Scott's party was a grim reminder of the dangers of this desolate sub-continent.
