Synopsis:
The dark secrets of the Kremlin unravel in this story of the former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko who was poisoned in London in 2006. It takes the viewer behind the headlines of one of the most shocking news stories of recent years, offering a fascinating look at modern Russia. Litvenko’s secret service career began in the former Soviet Union working as an operative detective in the KGB. It wasn’t until he was ordered to assassinate an oligarch that his rebellion began. He staged a press conference in Moscow where he accused the Russian secret service of misdeeds. Within days he was under investigation, within weeks in prison and was soon forced to flee the country.
During the five years between his escape and his poisoning from radioactive Polonium-210 in London, Litvinenko spent hours with filmmaker Andrei Nedrasov explaining the reasons for his rebellion and detailing the rise of the police state in Russia in the past decade. His narrative, interrupted by flashbacks into history, explains how the hopes for freedom and democracy after the collapse of Soviet Communism have been dashed by the war in Chechnya and the consolidation of power by President Vladimir Putin.
