- When Kris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis) is sent on a mission to the Solaris Space Station, he is confronted with a skeleton crew who are psychologically unstable due to the presence of what they call "visitors". Kris soon begins to encounter his own visitor - his late wife. Taunting him with illusory compassion, Kris must choose whether to cling to reality or submit to the planet's gift of a lost love regained.

Compelling psychological sci-fi classic - Solaris review by Mr Aquarium
Not for Star Wars fans; this is claustrophobic, at times positively unsettling, [one "resurrection" scene will stay with you for some time...] yet uses the sci-fi setting to focus on the main character's relationships. Possibly the most quietly intelligent sci-fi film ever made? Better than the later US remake. Curiously, for this Brit at least, the Russian ambiance adds to the otherworldliness of the film.
