Synopsis:
Matt Glaser has been chairman of the String Department at the Berklee College of Music in Boston for more than 20 years. He has performed widely in a variety of idioms with artists such as Stephane Grappelli, David Grisman, Lee Konitz, the Waverly Consort, Fiddle Fever, and his own group, the Wayfaring Strangers. Matt has published four books on contemporary violin styles, including "Jazz Violin" co-authored with the late Stephane Grappelli. He has written for many music magazines and has taught at the Mark O'Connor Fiddle Camp, University of Miami, American String Teacher Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, and many other fiddle camps, schools and conferences.
This dynamic, interactive course was developed by Matt Glaser specifically for early-intermediate fiddlers who want to start improvising in traditional swing and jazz styles. With relaxed good humor, he immediately gets you playing along with him, trading four-bar phrases in a unique call-and-response session. This method helps you build up increasingly complex phrases so you can start developing ideas and become a creative and spontaneous player. Matt fills his lesson with technical tips, theory and fascinating information on all aspects of swing/jazz music: the circle of fifths; improvising around dominant 7th chords; using diminished, augmented and whole tone scales; rhythmic accenting and articulation; bowing patterns; phrasing and - most important of all - how to swing! To help you understand how jazz improvising works, Matt breaks down and analyses important violin solos by Claude "Fiddler" Williams and Stephane Grappelli. By working through these pieces, you'll learn to incorporate riff-based, swinging phrases into an improvised solo and start making use of the vast capabilities of the violin in jazz playing.
