Synopsis:
This thoughtful, evocative program explores the life of a President thrust into the single greatest crisis the United States had ever faced; the events of that crisis; and the ultimate solution achieved, guaranteeing perpetual union. "Abraham Lincoln" worked his way up from humble beginnings to become the 16th President of the United States. He served in the White House in the midst of a monumental national crisis. "The Civil War" between the Northern and Southern states was the costliest and bloodiest war in the U.S. history. At stake was the nation's very existence. Between 1861 and 1865, countless battles were fought and tens of thousands of lives were lost.
Famous battles at Shiloh, Antietam, and Gettysburg pitted brother against brother. President Lincoln, though ill prepared for the trauma of a civil war, adapted himself to the circumstances to become an extraordinary leader. He is best known for the Gettysburg Address (one of the greatest speeches in American history) and signing the Emancipation Proclamation effectively abolishing slavery. His actions and tragic assassination ushered in the period known as "Reconstruction", when the States of the breakaway Confederacy were reintegrated into the United States of America. Reaching this goal, though highly controversial and fraught with peril, forever changed America from a nation divided to a truly "United" States.

Disappointed as I wanted to watch Civil War film prior to USA holiday. Film not seen at all..it had somehow been recorded over. No other copy appeared to be available on my reporting the problem.
