- A fugitive couple, Amedee Lange (René Lefèvre) and Valentine (Florelle), rent a room in a small hotel on the Belgian border. In the bar, the other guests wonder if Lange is the murderer being chased by the police. Valentine tells Lange's story so that the guests can decide for themselves if they should let him get away...

Four and a half stars? - Le Crime de Monsieur Lange review by JD
At the time of writing this had a 4.5 star rating from 162 reviews. I would suspect that this is a nostalgia biased rating from the older viewer for whom Jean Renoir is a fond memory. On this basis I would suggest this film to those in their late 70's early 80's. For me it was just too dated. The make up was music hall, the villain was a real cad, there was even a couple of songs thrown in for good measure. Good for its era but put some Brylcream in your hair to watch it.

An early, fast paced film from Jean Renoir......a homage to American cinema? Whilst undoubtedly a French language film, the style is early Hollywood featuring a bottle blonde who kicks ass when it needs to be kicked, runs a laundry and even breaks into a high warbling song worthy of Edith Piaf. As a previous reviewer has bluntly stated, the charms of this film would be lost on younger audiences.... Monsieur Lange has it's devotees, but they are more likely to be found amongst french film afficionados who are able to place it within the historic and political context of the 1930's.
