Synopsis:
Horseracing: A History of the Flat Since 1900
Racing entered the 20th Century as the preserve of royalty and the rich but during the last 100 years it has changed radically and the sport is now a worldwide industry with mass appeal. Presented by the legendary John Francome and narrated by Alastair Down, this comprehensive video tells the story of fortunes won and lost on horses that became household names and of the extraordinary and varied cast of characters who have punctuated the sport's history. This programme concentrates solely on the high finance and fashion of flat racing and includes rare black and white footage of the memorable races, jockeys and horses from the turn of the 20th Century onwards as well as races from as far afield as Japan, Dubai and America. Relive the brilliance of pint-sized Sir Gordon Richards and the ruthless artistry of the greatest of them all, Lester Piggott, as well as the horses that became household names, from Mill Reef and Nijinsky through to the incredible Rock of Gibraltar. It is the complete story of the last 100 years, ending with the 2003 Derby victory of the well-backed Kris Kin.
Horseracing: A History of the Jumps Since 1900
Presented by the legendary John Francome and narrated by Alastair Down, this comprehensive video tells the story of fortunes won and lost on horses that became household names and of the extraordinary and varied cast of characters who have punctuated the sport's history. This programme focuses on the gritty and sometimes grim realities of the jumping scene and, in particular, the rise of the Cheltenham Festival to its unique place in today's sporting calendar and, of course, the world's most famous race, the Grand National. There are some incredible stories and heroic feats, both by horse and jockey alike - Bob Champion and Aldaniti; Michael Dickinson's first five home in the 1983 Gold Cup; Arkle and Mill Reef; Red Rum; Jenny Pitman and Corbiere; Desert Orchid and Best Mate, winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2002, 2003 and 2004 The programme also looks at the heroic feat of Tony McCoy, who became the winning-most jockey in August 2002 and includes Monty's Pass victory in the 2003 Grand National, a victory that landed yet another massive gamble for the Irish!
Lester Piggott - His Classic Story
In a career spanning over 40 years, Lester Piggott has dominated the sport of flat racing, becoming the housewife's choice, the punter's favourite and the man his fellow jockeys feared above all others. In the 1984 St. Leger at Doncaster, Lester powered home the resolute Commanche Run to break Frank Buckle's longstanding record of 27 Classic wins. In his 50th year he added another classic when partnering Shadeed to victory in the 2,000 Guineas before starting what everyone thought was to be a glorious retirement. However in 1990 at the age of 54, Lester stunned the racing world by resuming his riding career after completing a two year prison sentence. Like everything in Lester's riding life, his comeback was triumphant, culminating in this 30th and final Classic, success on Rodrigo de Triano, appropriately owned by Robert Sangster. The film, presented and narrated by Channel 4 Racing's Derek Thompson, is an historical tribute to Piggott's Classic record breaking performance, and includes coverage of all his Classic victories. Interspersed with interviews with many of the great names in racing, including the legendary Vincent O'Brien, Clive Britten and the voice of racing Sir Peter O'Sullevan O.B.E.
