Synopsis:
Mark Whitacre is secretly rolling tape during a meeting of corporate honchos who are illegally price fixing. Meeting after meeting, Mark rolls tape after tape. He's sure the tapes will make him a U.S. hero. What went wrong? Director Steven Soderbergh reteams with one of his Ocean's trilogy stars for a snappy skewering of big business based on the true story of the highest-ranking corporate whistle-blower in U.S. history. Matt Damon portrays Whitacre, whip-smart and immensely likable even as his schemes become increasingly untethered. Pay attention to the fun and intrigue of The Informant!

Disappointing and lacking any real excitement. - The Informant! review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert
08/09/2010

Mark Whitacre is a high ranking executive at ADM, a corporation specialising in cereal and grain processing. When ADM's 'Lysine' production repeatedly fails to meet production targets Whitacre is put under pressure to fix the problem. He lies to his bosses that the Lysine plant has been infected with a virus which is causing the Lysine producing bacteria to die, and claims a rival from a Japanese rival is demanding $10 million to provide a cure and reveal an ADM employee who is secretly working for a rival. When ADM call in the FBI, Whitacre backtracks on his industrial extortion story and reveals to the FBI that ADM is involved with other corporations in a massive price fixing scandal. And when the FBI ask him to go undercover to provide evidence the lies become bigger and bigger. While it's not a bad film 'The Informant!' is fairly disappointing. Matt Damon does a good job as Whitacre and there are some amusing moments, but story wise it's just not that thrilling. It's a typical tale of a habitual liar who's lies eventually catch up with him. If you're looking for a film with a similar storyline try Billy Ray's 'Shattered Glass' and 'Breach', and Lasse Hallstrom's 'The Hoax', all of which are far more absorbing and thrilling tales of lies and deceit.

Matt Damon is not wooden - The Informant! review by JD

Spoiler Alert
18/11/2011

In the Oceans series and Bourne trilogy Damon is a little wooden. This it seems is a complete misunderstanding of mine as this character is brilliantly played. An immensely complex mix of mad, devious and naive. Moving mainly from meaning well to barking... I was blown away with how easy it was to feel the change in the character even in its most intricate shifts. The film is otherwise quite average. The direction in particular is uninteresting and vague. The conclusion relies too much on printed epilogue.
