Synopsis:
Looking back at the accomplishments of The Jackson 5 and The Jackson's it's hard to truly capture the magnitude and impact that their music had on teenagers all across America. Their music was the soundtrack of our generation. We grew up with them; read about them in Ebony and Jet magazine and watched them debut on 'The Ed Sullivan Show'. From 1969 on thru to 2000 and beyond, The Jackson's as a unit and as solo artists have made more hits, sold more records and stayed on the musical scene longer than any other family group in American music history. They are America's "First Family of Music".
The only other musical family that comes close, would be the Isley Bros who have been making hits for over 40 years. The Isleys' success is one of incredible longevity and perseverance, but they don't even come close to the overall success and global impact that the Jackson family has achieved. The root of course, is The Jackson 5 and the phenomenal string of hits that the group cranked out under the guidance of the Motown machine. The group's early hits are pop music classics - "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save", then as the music evolved in the mid-70's the group changed also with love ballads, "I'll be There" and "Never can say goodbye". When a new, musical movement began to take shape in the clubs across America, the hit "Dancing Machine" became an early disco anthem. Throughout all of the twists and turns of popular music, The Jackson's have been able to remain trendsetters. The group had that intangible thing that you can't always describe; magic, the spark, charisma, that "thing" that's timeless. Without The Jackson's, there's no "Thriller", no "Control", no "Bad" and no "Rhythm Nation". It's easy to forget the legend. It's easy to see just what's popular at this particular moment in time. But to put it all into perspective, The Jackson's had an impact in changing the course of Black music and in turn popular music of the 20th Century. And throughout their career, we followed. We watched as they each grew to adulthood; and we grew with them. We followed the musical growth. We listened to their universal messages of young love, "Never can say Goodbye", taking the production helm with hits on their own like "Shake your Body (down to the Ground)" and"Can you Feel It". The songs reflect the optimism of the period and the youthful excitement was so contagious that the group's early hits have been sampled by hip-hop artists and made into hits over 25 years later. The Jackson's have left an incredible musical legacy that will stand for future generations to enjoy. "Music to dance to, to sing along with, music to inspire, and music to enjoy". Inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, The Jackson's have left and incredible legacy.
