- The Mysterious Cities of Gold is a French-Japanese animation series made in collaboration between Studio Pierrot and DIC Entertainment. The plot is set in the year 1532, where a navigator named Mendoza and his allies Sancho and Pedro team up with Esteban, an orphan boy, and together they embark on a quest to find one of New World’s Seven Cities of Gold in hopes to locate Esteban’s missing father.
