Young brothers Vanya and Andrey have an especially close bond, compensating in their own way for a childhood spent growing up without a father. Running home after a fight with neighbourhood kids the boys are shocked to discover their father has returned after a twelve year absence. With their mother's uneasy blessing Vanya and Andrey set out on what they believe will be a fishing vacation with this enigmatic stranger. The trip turns into a test of manhood which pushes their father-son relationship to its limits as the reunion is suddenly brought to a premature end. A mesmerising thriller set against the stunningly beautiful backdrop of Northern Russia, 'The Return' is the remarkable feature debut for director Andrey Zvyagintsev.

A real masterpiece by Andrei Zvyagintsev. The acting is wonderful, the setting brilliant & very eerie. Even if you don't like subtitles this will appeal as it's very visual with little dialogue. Sadly, the boy Vladimir Garin (who played Andrey) died shortly after the film was released.
