Summer 1944, in an elegant villa in Tuscany In the summer of 1944, Penny and her younger sister Baby, orphaned by a car accident, are taken to live with their mother's sister in an elegant villa in the Tuscan countryside. The aunt is married to a handsome German Jew, a lover of music and the arts. The entire story is viewed through Penny's eyes.
