The Allied offensive, which began in lat summer 1917, was fought in some of the most atrocious conditions imaginable. Lashing rain had turned the shell-cratered Flanders fields into a treacherous sucking quagmire of liquid mud. Bogged down and with 225,000 casualties, the Allies desperately needed to take Passchendaele Ridge, a seemingly impregnable network of German pill-boxes packed with machine guns. The attack was considered suicidal, but it went ahead anyway... 'The Western Front: The Last Great Offensives' looks at the final great offensives fought on the Western Front, combining extraordinary archive film and hundreds of rare photographs with the letters and journals of the commanders, officers and men on both sides. It tells the story of the great German offensive of March 1918 and its subsequent stalling amid crumbling supply lines and stiffening opposition; and of the last, victorious Allied offensive, concentrating on the central part played by the Canadian divisions.
