Following the deaths of their parents, twins Anna and Lotte Bamberg are cruelly separated at the age of six. Anna is sent to live on her Uncle's farm in Germany, growing up in relatively harsh circumstances, while the sickly Lotte moves to the Netherlands and welcomed into a loving home by distant relatives. Contact between the two is immediately broken and the sisters grow up in separate worlds. Years later, when the Second World War erupts in Europe, both sisters lives are irrevocably changed.
