We Are What We Are (aka Somos Lo Que Hay) review by Siva Kumar - Cinema Paradiso

‘We Are What We Are’ is a Mexican horror movie directed by Jorge Grau. The movie features a Cannibal family who performs bloody rituals and consume human flesh. After the death of their father, the widow and three children are helpless in finding victims for their hunger. The responsibility of hunting new victims now rests in the hands of their teenage sons.

The movie contains all the aspects of a modern day horror. Unlike many other horror films which portray the struggles of the victims, this one follows the life and struggles of the killers. The family bond between the mother and her children is portrayed realistically. The entire movie is equally dark and disturbing with its portrayal of social problems prevailing in the society.

This film also focuses more on the socio-political problems in the country like corrupt officials, urban violence, impoverished neighbourhood and prostitution etc. This makes it a bit different from other horror flicks we normally come across. Some scenes of the movies are shot beautifully and the camera work is pretty good throughout the film. The gory scenes are shot so real and it will make the faint hearted people uncomfortable. Horror flick fans can enjoy this movie just like any other movie.

Though the film clearly belongs to the horror genre, it carries a slight message to an ill fated society. The director has taken a bold step in delivering the movie in this style. ‘We Are What We Are’ is definitely a movie to watch if you are a sucker for horror films.
