Among the passengers on a plane flying over the Mato Grasso are Tom, an American journalist, a banker fleeing his country carrying smuggled jewels, and a gangster who knows about the jewels. He kills the banker's bodyguard and forces the pilot to land in the jungle. Some of the passengers, including the gangster, are killed in the forced landing. The survivors are Bill, the pilot; Tom; the banker; a lady from Vienna; a Swedish woman, another woman from South America, and a young German. Bill, who has found out what the banker has in his possession, kills him and the Swedish woman, who he believes witnessed the murder. While trying to get back to Rio de Janeiro, the group endure bandits, fighting and intrigue as the various parties try to make off with the jewels. But as tensions rise, will any of them make it out alive?
