Beast

Good story and satisfying ending.

I didn't realise Jessie Buckley was Irish - her English accent was perfect.  A good story of a mixed up, possibly mentally ill girl, trying to keep it together despite a difficult home life and a new boyfriend who could be a serial killer.  Nice clear dialogue for a change, and I thought the ending wrapped the film up satisfactorily and it was well acted by all the cast.

Bad Times at the El Royale

Strange but enjoyable

This film didn't go where I expected but was an interesting watch.  I thought it might be, because Jeff Bridges is a great actor and I'm sure he can pick and choose his parts.  He doesn't disappoint in this.  The soundtrack is terrific but the film's overlong, and I got a bit bored towards the end - not sure what Chris Hemsworth added in the final part of the story, but as always he was nice to watch!  Recommended, but pay attention to all the flashbacks.

Wild Tales

Very entertaining!

A good collection of four films, the last of which is hysterical - like the main character.  I laughed out loud.  Recommended.

Phantom Thread

Beautiful cinematography

Basically a film about dependence, set in the 1950s.  Daniel Day Lewis is, as always, terrific and really inhabits his part of the dress-designer head of a fashion house who seems to have been a mummy's boy and still fixates on her death.  The film didn't go where I expected it to, but that made it more interesting, and the sumptuous gowns on show were fabulous. Not a cheery story though, but I enjoyed it for the skill of the actors and it's slow pace.  A fascinating tale.

Avengers: Infinity War

Entertaining

Well, I liked it.  A great way to spend a couple of hours plus.  Nice to see Captain America looking a bit more mature with the beard and deeper voice, and Chris Hemsworth is always worth a view i.m.h.o.  He always looks as if he's about to corpse.  Great to see all then actors together, although I was a bit confused about what the red guy did??

Upgrade

Great low budget film

I really enjoyed this.  The story was entertaining and the acting was good.  Something a bit different and a good ending.  Recommended.

Ghost Stories

Not bad

The ending linking the stories together wasn't very satisfactory, but this film was watchable if only to see what exactly was happening. Not sure I would recommend though, as it's not frightening in any way.

Christopher Robin

Well, I enjoyed it!

A lovely gentle film, and I didn't feel preached to, nor did I recognise the political correctness (I usually do). I didn't find Ewan MacGregor miscast, but I hated the voices of Winnie the Pooh and friends - American.......Noooooo! As someone who read the stories as a child, the Disney version of the animals is so wrong. However, I would recommend this when you want something pleasant to watch.

Very entertaining

This really kept my interest right up to the end. The acting was great and the story a bit different as you didn't know who were the bad guys were until near to the end. A good ending too. Recommended.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Irreplaceable Freddie

Great film. Yes, some of the chronology is off and some reviewers criticize the face that the is film not completely true to life, but if it had been, it would never have got to the cinema without massive censorship- no XXX certificates!

This was a celebration of Freddie and Queen's music, and was an entertaining, and yes, sanitized view of Freddie's life. With the other members of Queen having to agree to the content, it was never going to be anything else. It was the music that mattered, and that was the point of the film. The acting was spot-on and I never thought anyone could get so near to portraying the larger-than life Freddie - a triumph.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

More for younger fans

I didn't enjoy this as much as other Marvel films, as I felt it was more aimed at children than adults. Some entertaining bits, but disappointing really. Give me Iron Man and the others any day.

Venom

Disappointing

Not the best Marvel film, and Tom Hardy is not good in it. Bit boring, although it picks up a bit in the second half. Wouldn't recommend though.

Tell No One

Stretches credibility

A run of the mill thriller, but worth renting as the acting is good, but the story is implausible - it twists and turns too much and gets lost up its own .....! I can never understand why people moan about subtitles - can't they read? I find that when dialogue is mumbled, the subtitles are really useful. If you liked this, can I recommend "Los Secretos en sus Ojos" (The Secret in their Eyes), a fabulous film that's a thriller, love story, comedy and more, with an fantastic ending. Get the Brazilian DVD with subtitles as the English remake is awful (sorry subtitle-haters).

Insidious: The Last Key

What a waste of time

I enjoyed the first Insidious, but this is awful. So slow and boring. The only good thing is the new demon - good costume! The main character (the medium) is an awful actress, and her sidekicks' attempted witticisms are painful. Don't bother.

The Haunting of Black Wood

A different story

I really enjoyed this film, and for once it had a good ending. The acting was great, and it really made you want to find out what was going on. I thought it might be yet another slasher horror, but it so much better than those. Recommended.
