The Yacoubian Building

Illuminating

(Edit) 04/08/2014

Viewed because I enjoyed the book, but we were blown away by the film. Wonderful acting, superb direction and most of all, giving some insight into what it must be to like to be Egyptian and to live in Cairo. A deeply different culture. I could bang on at length, but all I will say is that if you have any interest at all in the middle East or in Islamic society you will love this film.

Blackboards

Grim but gripping

A compelling film, which leaves you filled with sadness for the unhappiness of the lives portrayed. It is pretty unrequited gloom, and there are many puzzling cultural non-sequiturs. Visually it is memorable.

The Lost Prince

Absolutely wonderful!

(Edit) 09/03/2014

One of the very best things ever made for television - the equal of Brideshead. Wonderfully acted, sumptuously and expensively staged, directed without a false note. I come back to it again and again - each time I find something new. Only jarring note is that the sound on the DVD is much poorer than on my old VHS tape.
