The trouble with transferring a stage musical to the screen is that it lacks the frequent direct contact between the actor and each and every member of the audience. This movie starts well but the need for suspended disbelief that a stage show requires only rarely transfers to the screen. Of course Cabaret, Chicago, South Pacific et al managed it but this movie doesn't.
This is one of the most boring films I've ever watched. A complete let down. Disjointed the only memorable things are landscapes. The ending denies belief. Terrible movie.
If you like derring-do and all that then this movie is for you. I have watched many worse movies but this one despite the flag waving rescue (a bit reminiscent of John Wayne winning WWII) at the end is a good watch - if a book can be a good read why can't a film be a good watch. Passes a couple of hours enjoyably. Not a great or even memorable movie but not bad.
Little to say. I loved every single second of this extraordinary filmic experience. Mind shattering images. A work of art.
I was looking forward to the interpretation of one of the most important books of the second part of the 20th century. The subtitles for dialogue not in English was too small, too long and almost impossible to read. I realise how important it was to use actors originating from the sub-continent but sadly much of the dialogue was, like the subtitles, impossible to de-code. A great pity that a filmic interpretation of a great book should be so clumsily produced and directed.
