I think the film gets better marks than it deserves because of the nature of the story, It deals with a weighty issue and even if half true it's an amazing story that deserves to be told. It never gripped me, however. Surely this was a dangerous and threatening time but you never felt the danger, instead there was an underlying flipness about it that undermined any sense of authenticity. I also thought the lead, John David Washington, lacked screen presence, charisma and gravitas.
I didn't enjoy Dan Stevens' portrayal of Dickens but otherwise there were characterful performances not least from Christopher Plummer and the scenes of early Victoriana looked authentic (and expensive!). One wonders, however, whether there was really a story worth telling here, we've had so much Dickensian drama from the BBC and others over the years. The stories told by his books are better I think than the story told by the film.
The film deals with some weighty personal issues in the context of young girl's adherence to the rules of the Witness Movement but in an agonisingly slow and low key manner. Some might find it revealing. It certainly isn't a Witness Movement recruitment film. A good effort for what it is perhaps.
An old fashioned romantic film noir. Executed with English style and charm by a very good cast. A refreshing change from American cocaine snorting, in your face, comic book characters, special effects, sub standard dialogue tedium that seems to have popular appeal these days.
Some agonisingly slow scenes of inactivity, rehashed scenes from better movies, nothing original or imaginative or, frankly, very interesting. A bit creepy here and there but not scary.
Denzil Washington let down by an Inferior plot and dialogue. Becomes more predictable as the film goes on, one or two good action scenes though. I agree with others, not a patch on the original - why are sequels always so disappointing I wonder.
Based on a true story , this should have been as engaging as the many other mobster films, but it isn't! Disjointed, surprisingly low key too often, gloomy cinematics, lack of screen presence amongst some of the cast. Just about watchable,
In truth this was a fairly routine chiller ( lots of blood btw) but it was well executed and given extra spice by allegedly being inspired by true events. Hope I'm not spoiling anything but I have to say the ending was a misjudged amateurish cheap shot.
A complicated plot might make it too much effort for some but it moves along at a cracking pace with plenty of twists and turns and plenty of action. I'm not from the cinematic comic book generation, neither am I some doe eyed teenage girl, this is how I like my films to be!
Not perhaps the most complex of plots but nevertheless it was well played and the story moved along nicely. Not interested in whether historical licence has been applied, just enjoy for what it is, entertainment
This film pales badly in comparison with the original. Poor story line, unenthusiastic acting. It just lacks freshness. I thought it was boring but some might like it for the songs and the sunshine.
Tries too hard to be an arty luvvie film. Tries to pretend it's clever when it's not. Tries to pretend that it's enigmatic when it's not. Too many over long scenes of total inaction.
I shouldn't be so critical I suppose. This film is unashamedly aimed at the teenage demographic (and brain dead adults) across the world.
I think the script must have been written by a teenager too - no imagination, some really dreadful dialogue. Extravagant CGI as you would expect but nothing jaw dropping. The cast were unconvincing, uncharismatic and lacking in gravitas. The film came nowhere near crossing any generational or intellectual thresholds.
Painfully slow plot, lifeless performance by Liam Neeson, yesteryear events, little contemporary interest for UK viewers.
Not the most originally themed story line but given some piquancy by being vaguely related to a true story. Helen Mirren once again showing what a versatile actor she is. Don't expect too much and you'll enjoy it!.
