Reminded me what talented actors and directors we have in the UK. Also, this is better than the much more hyped film '1917'.

In Britain most of us don't know much about the war the Americans fought against the Japanese in the Pacific. This film explains the why and the how really clearly, both from the political and the human angle. Another lack for us Brits is knowledge about the US home front. Again, the film supplies comprehensive coverage by focusing on four representative towns, their inhabitants and their politics. And the best thing is that it all makes a fascinating story.

Not only is this a beautiful film with major stars of the mid-20th century French cinema, but there are two excellent sections of commentary by two different experts who give information about the director, Max Ophuls, his work and his time.

This black and white film offers an exciting story, but what amazes is the wonderful, atmospheric depiction of a particular time - immediately post-WW2 - and place - the East End of London. There is also a big cast of fascinating characters, with superb leads. The whole thing just pulses with life. I watched it through twice.

Exciting (relatively - we know everyone got out alive), interesting, enjoyable to watch and well acted. A good piece of entertainment.

Brilliant latest part of brilliant series. As good as Breaking Bad, to which the series is a prequel. Terrific ensemble acting. And the discussions by members of the production team at the end of each episode are fascinating.

I really wanted to see this, having seen it on TV when it first came out, and thought it excellent. But alas the disc wouldn't play. It had quite a big mark on it, which I think was a scratch. Certainly, I couldn't wipe it off. I had to send it back unseen.
