Klown

Pathetic and morally questionable

(Edit) 01/10/2021

Not sure how this got onto my list, but I wish I never rented it. Maybe you need to have seen the TV show to find it funny, I didn't. The performers do a decent job, but the supposedly shocking events fall flat, and everything is just so predictable.

The two main characters are just pathetic immoral man-babies, but we spend so much time in their company to make the movie itself pathetic and morally dubious. Quite sad that a film only made in 2010 would seem so dated already.

Little Joe

Very odd film

(Edit) 27/07/2021

Plot holes aplenty. Unconvincing premise. One dimensional characters. Tedious pace. Distracting soundtrack.

I often find myself defending films of this kind, but Little Joe just didn't work for me on any level.

The flowers don't look real. The scientists don't act like scientists. The themes are vague. The ending is amateurish. And the way that mental health issues are handled is borderline offensive

Poor effort all round.

County Lines

Brutal

(Edit) 16/05/2021

Brutal and realistic story of a school kid drawn into an angle of the drug world known as county lines, written and directed by a former youth worker who knows that life for real.

At under 90 minutes it's economical, well shot, and extremely well cast - that's what hit me most, the faces of these characters really ring true and haunt the memory.

A horrifying snapshot of what lies under the surface of modern day Britain. Director's commentary well worth a listen.

Villain

Nothing new

(Edit) 23/11/2020

Not sure why this was on my list, maybe because I've always quite enjoyed Craig Fairbrass as a screen presence. But this is a cliché ridden unimaginative affair, with cartoonish characters and a predictable plot.

Also there's zero extras on the DVD, and not even subtitles, so I couldn't recommend it as a rental. Try Hyena instead if you haven't seen it, set in a similar world but far far superior.

High Life

Imagination required!

(Edit) 22/12/2019

Astrophysics and existentialism. Black holes and bodily fluids. This film is not for everyone! I found it quite fascinating, although it took a second run, and a skim of the extras (two Q&As) to really get my head round it.

It's abstract and oblique at times, yes there's a crying baby early on, yes there's mumbling, but if you are patient and open-minded I believe you will enjoy the ride.

Juliette Binoche is great in it too.

In Darkness

Impressive and atmospheric.

(Edit) 17/02/2019

I was compelled to look this up in anticipation of the upcoming 'Mr. Jones' by the same director, and I'm glad I did. An incredible story told with no frills and no Hollywood embellishments, with some superb performances by the leads. Suitably claustrophobic and brutal, there were also unexpected sex scenes and humorous interludes.

I rarely write reviews, but felt I had to counter the sole review on here, by Alyse Garner, who bizarrely called it "so poor", "mildly disappointing", criticized many aspects, and gave five stars!

Believe me, this film is well made, and well worth watching.

Beast

Tense and intense

(Edit) 06/01/2019

100 minutes, no flab, no filler. We enter the life and the mind of a trapped, confused and emotional young woman as she tries to make sense of herself and her surroundings. It's not an easy ride, but one hell of an experience.

The biggest compliment I can give to this superbly well-made film is that despite all the effed up stuff that happens in it, it still seems very real and very believable. Which is scary

The Bridge: Series 4

No special features

(Edit) 12/07/2018

I have watched every episode of this excellent series already, but wanted to rent the final disc to see the "Special Features" which are supposedly on there. But there's only one feature, a two-minute trailer for the box set. Nothing more.

I was hoping for a making of, cast interviews etc. Seems YouTube is where to go if that's what you're after.
