Very unusually for me, just couldn’t get into this film and bailed out after 30 mins.

My problem and struggling to get to 100 characters.

Beautifully played out drama. Serious subject in 1941 given a comedic first half, the second half a serious note to the bitter end.

The film was anchored by star turns by 15 yr old George Cole and Alastair Sim.

A challenging film to make during WW2, but what a result. Nothing was skimped in the making of the film. 

What it really comes down to is getting an actor who is

a) bloody good and b) able to transform from relative youth to ageing Colonel.

Livesey is brilliant in the role which is not an easy one. 

Good ol’ Orson Welles! Always up for a novel approach….in directing and acting.

Can’t put together a coherent critique like others, I would just say a very enjoyable film with some enjoyable acting and story line.

Wonderful to see the understated lives of village people so well portrayed. With the underlying menace of war round the corner, it winds up the tension in a subtle fashion. Changes between B&W and colour novel- I love it!

At this time of pandemic, mental health, abuse at home, and a myriad of issues women have to face, the director let unfold the menopausal angst, the catalyst of the leads actions. Bringing together the strands of seperation, motherhood, facing decline, made a film worth 4+ stars. Enjoy it, enjoy the humanity.

Jeez, art is SO subjective! I found this film very boring initially, and couldn’t relate to the participants at all. Must be me, but I found the film dry and strange to say, unattractive.

Mmm.....was expecting the best of Tati based on critical reviews.

How disappointing, my yawns started 10 minutes in, then sleep came and I returned the dvd.

Was waiting for some Action, but didn’t get any that satisfied me. 

What a great series of movies Toy Story has become. Everyone a winner with wonderful characterisations. Forkie in 4 just adorable.

The film a winner alltheway. 

Mmm...was looking forward to seeing and hearing this movie.

After 20 minutes my brain was numb through the incessant repetition of song and Moulin Rouge type of presentation , but nowhere near as good. Disappointed.

A totally predictable storyline and outcome, and none the worse for that!

It’s a gentle, beautifully worked story of the awkwardness and societal problems of gay love. I thought  the acting was spot-on in all parts, the kid’s especially. Thoroughly enjoyed this film.

I can only endorse what the other reviewer TB has said.

A special film that will live in my memory. 

Typical French film....wonderful portrayal of rural life during the 2nd World War. The kids are excellent, and uneven casting of the adults doesn’t seem to undermine the film at all. 

As ever with old French films.......charming. 

Wow, didn’t know what to expect from this film. What it delivered was a story of a man who morphed from base sexual desires with hustlers, to a father-like figure once he understood the travails of the young guy he initially hooks up with. Considering the direction the story takes, it is somewhat underplayed and all the better for it.

Two leads are excellent.
