Honeyland

Stepping into another world

(Edit) 21/04/2020

Stepping into another world and seeing the conflicts of drastically different approaches to life. Such a powerful way of showing how life has changed and what is needed in the world namely respect for nature.

The main character is such an interesting woman.

An aside, I was left with a great yearning for proper honey like you never see normally.

2016: Obama's America

More about the guy presenting than about Obama

(Edit) 11/03/2020

Maybe I didnt look into the content enough in advance but had to stop watching the film after 25 minutes as it felt a bit contrived and the guy presenting it kept talking about what he and Obama had in common such as getting married the same year etc. That really is of no interest to me as the presenter was not of interest to me and also he was from the Reagan administration which did not instil confidence in me about his angle. It felt like the presenter had alot of pet theories about Obama and his own agenda. Not great and probably a bit late in the day to be watching this given how th8ngs have unfolded since. Will consider my selections more carefully in future. Who knows the remaining hour of the film may have been great but I doubted it.

The Souvenir

Disappointing and depressing

(Edit) 14/02/2020

A bleak themed film which is so over edited that there is little chance to feel connected to the characters and whilst it was well acted the whole story was depressing and seemed to have no worthwhile message nor was it shallow light entertainment just a disjointed depression fest I am afraid.

If Beale Street Could Talk

Moving, painful but real and eye opening.

(Edit) 24/09/2019

A moving story with a fantastic cast rich in dialogue and strong and sobering in it’s message. Highly recommend this a loving story amidst prejudice and injustice. Beautifully acted by all.

I Am Not Your Negro

Wake up call

(Edit) 07/06/2019

We found this a strong, sobering and chilling documentary about the violent, destructive and unaffirmative treatment of black people in the USA historically but also in the present. We were appreciative of having our eyes opened in this way by James Baldwin, such a skilled , intelligent articulate and composed man of integrity. Highly recommend it. It’s not comfortable viewing but offers a particular angle and insightful perspective.
