I am always slightly worried that books will suffer on translation to the screen. But this film, despite having to cut certain minor storylines, is completely true to the spirit of Stieg Larsson's novel. Noomi Rapace is mesmerising as Salander and Michael Nyqvist is completely believable as the journalist who is drawn into solving a decades old family mystery at the behest of its ageing patriarch. I had wanted to watch the recent remake with Daniel Craig et al but ordered the original Swedish film by mistake:I am so glad I did - this is a wonderful film.
Depp and Jolie are both great actors who are always extremely watchable. This is a light hearted but extremely engaging film - if James Bond had been born female, this might have been the result!
Wonderful acting, great period settings and a strangely compelling storyline. It is easy to see why this film won the awards that it did.
This should have been a tense, dramatic thriller and it started off well enough with the scenes with Damon and Paltrow. But after that it descended into a boring and slow-moving film; watching a culture grow would have been more interesting.
