This was Britain's year of national humiliation. When Colonel Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal, Britain and France, with Israel's backing, embarked on a major military mission to take it back by force. The lack of support from the world community brought home to Britain that she was no longer the superpower she once was. In other news, Britain became home to the world's first nuclear power station and,despite Khrushchev paying us a visit, relations with Moscow worsened due to the crushing of the Hungarian Uprising by Soviet tanks.
