If only one writer had to be picked to represent the 19th Century, it would have to be Dickens. Much of the reason for this would have to do with his fascination with its figures across the social spectrum, his indignation at its hypocrisy and exploitation, and his warmth towards the humble and the compassionate of his time. But it would also have to do with the fact that he was instrumental in defining Christmas for all of us for all time.
