It took the ex-army and radio comedian a while to break into television, but once The Dick Emery Show was launched in 1963 he never looked back - he would make 166 editions over 28 years. Emery's flair with character, costume and make-up saw a host of memorable characters fill the show: the man-hungry, sexually frustrated Hettie; the infamous toothy vicar; the skinhead Bovver Boy; camp Clarence; the ageing First World War veteran Lampwick and - of course - Mandy, Emery's most famous character. The appearance of the confused blonde whose stupefied looks eventually progressed to her "ooh, you are awful" catchphrase, were eagerly awaited across the nation.
