This fascinating programme from 1999 shows diesel locomotives working in various locations throughout Britain and includes rare footage illustrating how changes to the railway system have brought us diesel locomotives that have become so familiar. Classes featured include 08/09, 20, 31, 37, 47, 56, 59 and 60.
More Diesels in Action
Visiting stations like Warrington Bank Quay, Wolverhampton, Culham, Willington, Sellafield and many more, this video, produced in 2000, brings us charming footage of Classes 20 and 47, as well as a visit to Ashfordby mines, where we take a look at the locomotives as they earn their keep transporting coal. We also get a rare glimpse of the Daventry International freight rail terminal and find out how it works as part of the vast European freight rail system.

Portraying rail freight operations during the period of privatisation, this programme from 2000 features locomotives at work coal handling, as part of steel manufacture, oil refinement and container movement. Shunting operations at Longport Junction, Stoke-on-Trent are also covered, as well as traffic passing through Ryecroft Junction and Walsall.
The HST, DMU and Electrics
Dating from 2000, this programme contains a detailed look at the motive power used to carry the majority of UK rail travellers, including the cross-country journeys of the HST and the diesel multiple-units providing service to smaller countryside locales. Also included is a look at the electric locomotives that power the main line express services between major cities.
