Synopsis:
Craven Cottage Classics Fulham v Manchester United 2009 On the 21st March 2009 Fulham Football Club welcomed the Premier League, European and World Club Champions, Manchester United, to SW6 for their 2008/09 Barclays Premier League clash at Craven Cottage. Football pundits and the wider football community had considered this fixture a formality. Undefeated at Craven Cottage in 45 years United s current flock of international stars had brushed aside Fulham in their FA Cup clash two weeks earlier. The odds were undeniably stacked against Roy Hodgson s team. Fulham s charges ripped up the script that Saturday afternoon in March and sent shockwaves through the Barclays Premier League.
Backed by the boisterous support of the Craven Cottage faithful Fulham attacked United from the first whistle, performing with the self belief and will to defeat arguably the best team on the planet. Hodgson s side had United on the ropes during the first half, attacking in waves and when Paul Scholes was sent off for handling Bobby Zamora s goal bound header on the line, Danny Murphy stepped up to fire the penalty home. Playing their natural passing game, Fulham could have extended their lead after creating a host of fine chances in an action packed first 45 minutes. United s reaction was fierce in a pulsating second half Sir Alex Ferguson s side threw everything at Fulham but Hodgson s side stood firm. Danny Murphy s inspired captaincy led the way and a combination of energy, determination, sheer grit and an exceptional goalkeeping display by Mark Schwarzer kept United at bay. When substitute Zoltan Gera acrobatically volleyed home a second for Fulham with only three minutes remaining, Craven Cottage erupted as the players celebrated in front of the Hammersmith End. Fulham s victory over Manchester United at the Cottage on March 21st 2009 will be an afternoon that lives long in the memory of every Fulham fan. After the trauma of the 2008 relegation scrap twelve months earlier Fulham's win over United highlighted the Club's progress, having achieved a consistent top ten Premier League position over the course of the 08/09 season.
